Red Flag Warning | New Mexico Weather

from The New Mexico Weather Podcast

Good morning! I'm Aaron Jolly. And welcome to the New Mexico Weather Podcast — it's Tuesday, February 24th. Step outside right now and you'll feel something strange.. Air so dry it crackles. Humidity's plunging below 15 percent today, winds are gusting to 45 miles an hour. And Red Flag Warnings are up across eastern New Mexico. One spark. That's all it takes. No outdoor burning today, folks. Now here's where it gets interesting. New Mexico is splitting into three different days. Down south, you're waking up to 36 degrees around 6 A.M., but watch what happens. By 2 P.M., you're soaring to 77 degrees. Winds shift from east-southeast to south around 8 A.M. Tomorrow brings patchy blowing dust between 11 A.M. And 5 P.M.. And you hit 81 degrees with northwest gusts to 21 miles an hour. Tonight drops to a mild 45 degrees. Central New Mexico starts at 32 degrees around 5 A.M. By 3 P.M., you're at 72 degrees.. Nearly 32 degrees warmer than yesterday. Winds shift from southeast to southwest around 10 A.M., gusting to 15 miles an hour. Tonight falls to 39 degrees. Wednesday warms even more — 75 degrees — with northwest winds kicking up to 20 miles an hour. Up north, you're in a different world. You wake up to 34 degrees around 5 A.M., but it feels like 26 with that northeast breeze. Highs only reach 63 degrees today, with north winds howling at 10 to 20 miles an hour. Tonight dips to 39 degrees. Wednesday warms slightly to 66 degrees, but those winds stick around. The week ahead? Record-breaking warmth. Albuquerque could hit 80 degrees by Sunday.. The earliest 80-degree day on record by over a week. Southern New Mexico flirts with 85 degrees this weekend. But models hint at a pattern shift early next week. A cold front might sweep in with cooler temps and rain. Stay alert. Avoid outdoor flames. And enjoy that extra two minutes of daylight we're gaining each day. That's your forecast — we'll be back tomorrow.
