🚨 RED FLAG WARNING - New Mexico Weather 3/15 - Morning

from The New Mexico Weather Podcast

Good morning. New Mexico. I'm Michael Mosby. Folks, buckle up. A powerful cold front is slamming through the state right now. And it's bringing wind that'll test every loose object you forgot to tie down. Winds are already howling, northern New Mexico sees gusts to 40 miles an hour through mid-morning. Central areas? Peak around noon with 30 to 40 mile an hour gusts. The Sacramento Mountains? High Wind Warning until early afternoon — gusts could hit 60. That's strong enough to snap branches and knock out power. Here's the dangerous part. Those winds are combining with humidity dropping to 5 to 10 percent this afternoon. Red Flag Warnings cover northern and central New Mexico, while any spark spreads fast. No outdoor burning today. Period. Temperature-wise, it's a tale of two states, las Cruces hits 84 degrees before the front arrives. Albuquerque tops out near 65. But up north? Santa Fe only reaches 55, taos struggles to 51. That's the cold air pushing in. As the sun sets. Tonight brings a hard freeze statewide, albuquerque drops to 32. Santa Fe falls to 24, northern mountains sink into the teens. But here's the plot twist. Monday stays breezy and cooler — highs in the 50s and 60s. Then Tuesday, a massive dome of high pressure builds over the Southwest, while temperatures soar 24 degrees to 25 degrees above normal. We're talking 80s Tuesday, upper 80s Wednesday, low 90s by Thursday, some spots could see their earliest 90-degree day on record. Stay off the roads if you can today, blowing dust will reduce visibility. Secure loose objects. And absolutely no outdoor burning. See you this afternoon.
