Redefining Failure: Make Setbacks Your Secret Weapon with Andy Barrow #073

from Evolve Leadership · host Angus Nelson

Welcome to Evolve Leadership, where we dive deep into the intriguing world of time and its impact on our lives. We explore the delicate balance between the demanding nature of the grind and the positive momentum it brings. [3:45] How has the struggle for validation, accolades, and more unfolded in your life?Since I was 16 years old, my life has been all about pursuing more, and now at 54, I've started to figure things out. After a tumultuous journey filled with ups, downs, and twists, I've come to realize that my previous path wasn't truly fulfilling, even though it appeared successful to the outside world. It caused me to lose things I never wanted to let go of. Now, I see things with greater clarity and find peace in my life. I believe this journey of self-discovery is lifelong, but I'm currently in the best place I've been in over 30 years. I've learned to embrace every experience, even the struggles, as lessons that have shaped my story. My background took me from the UK into the media world, working with a record company and pursuing music as a frontman for a band, particularly with The Mission. However, my hunger for success brought its challenges. [10:40] What were some of the challenges, inner demons, or unfortunate circumstances that arose from having such a relentless hunger?I believed the other side of life was distant and didn't experience many mind-blowing moments. I thought meeting my partner's needs was enough, living in a beautiful home with horses on a five-acre property. Yet, my job kept me away, and what she truly wanted was my presence. Retirement never crossed my mind; I was solely focused on fulfilling my role and didn't consider life beyond it. Today, we remain great friends, and I appreciate the memories, but I've come to realize there could have been more to life than just my job. [12:41] Can you unpack a little about your journey? During that moment, I had a significant realization about my role in a relationship as a provider. It tapped into the primal nature of men, the urge to go out, hunt, and gather. Back then, emotional maturity and other important aspects weren't given much attention. It was all about survival and being strong in the eyes of others. I felt like a fierce animal, ready to conquer, driven by a tangible goal that resonated with my sense of duty as a man. It was a simple reminder of my purpose, and I embraced it wholeheartedly. My laser focus on that role made me effective in my jobs, even though I might have been a disaster in other aspects of life. At the time, that was all I thought anyone cared about, and so I went all in. My appearance was a reflection of my intense pursuit of my purpose. While my hair was white, my heart and soul were engulfed in the intensity of my mission, akin to darkness symbolized by blackness. It was a time when the complexities of emotional depth took a backseat, and I defined myself through my ability to provide and succeed in my work.[14:30] What were some of your expectations about what lay on the other side of achieving that goal? I used to believe that there was no other side to life beyond what I was living. I focused on providing everything she wanted and needed, and we lived in a beautiful home with two horses, seemingly a dream come true. However, my job kept me away from home five days a week, and she longed for my presence more than anything else. Retirement never crossed my mind; I thought this was my purpose and identity. I didn't consider what else life had to offer beyond being a provider. Despite the challenges, she's a great person, and we remain close friends to this day. At the time, I never thought beyond my job, but looking back, I realize there could have been more to life than just fulfilling my role as a...
