Repent and Believe: Christ’s First Command (Mark 1:15) | Charles Spurgeon

from Reformed Thinking · host Edison Wu

Deep Dive into Christ Commanded Repentance (Mark 1:15) by Charles SpurgeonThe sum of Jesus Christ’s teaching, the Alpha and Omega of His entire ministry, is the two-fold command: "Repent ye, and believe the gospel." This message is presented as a divine decree from God, carrying the same authority as the Ten Commandments, not an option to be chosen or neglected. Its neglect leads to the infinite peril of the soul.Genuine faith is primarily trust in Christ, but it is inseparably linked with true repentance. This means that no faith is true without sincere repentance for past sin, and no repentance is genuine unless it leads to faith. True repentance is a "very deep and solemn work", involving a thorough change of mind, illumination by the Holy Spirit, a discovery and hatred of iniquity, and profound sorrow for sin. It "sinks a man low as hell" in self-abasement. Conversely, genuine faith "lifts him high as heaven," leading to a hatred of the very thought of sin and a desire to tear down any "dearest idol" to worship Christ alone. It does not permit thinking lightly of past sin or living carelessly in the present. The gospel is a transformative work of grace where repentance "ejects sin" and "pulls down," while faith "admits Christ" and "builds up." Any faith that allows for careless living, dallying with sin, or tolerating others' vices is considered the "faith of devils" or "deceitful hypocrisy," a "falsehood and a refuge of lies" that will be useless at death. The primary hindrance to gospel acceptance is fatal self-righteousness. People often resent the message of repentance, viewing it as a "very great insult," which is proof of this inherent depravity. This resistance to God's command to humble oneself and trust Christ is why many despise Christ, leading to a doom worse than Sodom and Gomorrah.Reformed Theologian GPT: https://chat.openai.com/g/g-XXwzX1gnv-reformed-theologianhttps://buymeacoffee.com/edi2730

I'm a teacher, author, nature lover and for ten years I owned a coffeehouse cafe where my faith in the goodness of humans was restored every day. This podcast highlights the awesomeness of humanity - er...outside the warmongers, globalists, tyrants and politicians in general. You know, the rest of us weird, quirky and sometimes hilarious humans. We'll talk woo, probe mysteries and leave you thinking about something more interesting or entertaining or uplifting than your grocery list, or boss or that oil change your car needs. I talk too much because I can't help my Gemini moon and Leo Rising nature. I do a podcast because it's cheaper, funnier and more productive than therapy.
