Dyrene i Zoo er i virkeligheden en reservebank for truede artsfæller i naturen, og der foregår et stort arbejde med at sørge for modvirke indavl og koordinere forskning og samarbejde mellem zoologiske haver og naturreservater for vilde dyr. Bengt Holst har arbejdet i Zoologisk Have København fra han blev færdiguddannet som biolog i 1983. Fra 1994 til 2020 som vicedirektør og videnskabelig direktør. Fra 1993 -1999 medvirkede Bengt Holst sammen med Joachim Jerrik, Jens Degett og senere Jerk Langer i et ugentligt radioprogram (Studie 2000) om naturvidenskab på DR,P1. Bengt Holst er måske mest kendt for at stå frem i danske og udenlandske medier for at forsvare, at Zoo i 2014 aflivede en giraf, som blev obduceret foran et publikum og derefter spist af løverne. Bengt Holst har været formand for Dyreetisk Råd siden 2012. Podcasten som blev optaget i 2020 er den første i en serie af podcasts om forskning og udvikling i zoologiske haver.
