Rick and Morty S01E05 — Meeseeks and Destroy

Morty issues an ultimatum and Rick converts it into a wager: lead one adventure successfully and earn a say in every tenth trip, or stop complaining forever. Morty's chosen quest drops them into a medieval fantasy world where a giant dies by accident, they get tried for murder, and acquitted on a technicality. Back home, the Meeseeks Box Rick left with the family spirals out of control when Jerry's golf game refuses to improve, trapping an expanding crowd of existentially tormented helpers who eventually take a restaurant hostage. The episode's darkest thread runs through a tavern bathroom, where Morty is assaulted by a creature named Mr. Jellybean, fights free, and says nothing — and Rick figures it out anyway, then acts on it without making Morty explain.This episode marks the first time Rick demonstrably chooses Morty's protection over his own detachment, doing it quietly and without acknowledgment. The Meeseeks subplot reframes what looks like absurdist comedy into a coherent argument about purpose, suffering, and what happens when existence has no exit condition.
