The world is now facing another looming health crisis - antimicrobial resistance (AMR) or "superbugs". The World Health Organisation has warned that we are headed towards a post-antibiotic era, in which common infections could become life-threatening.

But the story of superbugs isn't as straightforward or as scary as it first sounds. In this new podcast, launched during World Antimicrobial Awareness Week 2021, you’ll hear about the most common sources of resistant infections in Australia and the world. You'll hear stories from the people with firsthand experience of those infections, the doctors who treat them and the scientists researching them.

We’ll be taking you inside hospitals, pharmacies, vet clinics, planes, gardens, farms and waterways. We’ll take you into the past and speculate on the future because, as you’ll come to find out, antimicrobial resistance is present in almost every aspect of our lives. And the task of improving awareness and understanding of superbugs is a tough one.

The podcast series is produced by a team of researchers and podcast producers, supported by funding and resources from the Australian Research Council and Swinburne University of Technology. The podcast series is one of the research outcomes from the project “Promoting Australian general public awareness and action on antimicrobial resistance” (ARCDP170100937), led by Associate Professor Mark Davis, conducted by social science and media researchers from Monash University, Swinburne University of Technology, University of Gothenburg and University of Strathclyde.

The Rise Of The Blue-Collar Noncompete Agnes Ford Traditionally, noncompete clauses have been reserved for whiter collar professionals. But as the labor market tightens, employers increasingly want blue-collar workers to adhere to these agreements too. The Rise of the Feminine Gina Lazenby There are huge shifts happening globally that not only involve the rise of women but also the rise of feminine values in men and, in women, which are re-shaping our collective future. We discover more and more women coming into their own, finding their unique purpose. In this surge for equality, some men may fear they will be displaced, but in reality, we’ll see how this is a movement that is more about a shared vision for a re-balancing of the planet. It’s not about women taking over but women standing alongside men in their rightful place. The question for many male leaders is how to integrate this new female power in organisations and fully understand that the shifts happening in their businesses, and politics are an embracing of new feminine values that will not only help them to adapt but also to thrive. This is a space where we can explore and bring together the conversations about what is emerging around the world as we witness shifts in power. The Rise of Silas Lapham by William Dean Howells Loyal Books The Rise of Silas Lapham is the most widely read of W.D. Howells’ novels. An example of literary realism, the story is about a farmer (Silas Lapham) who launches a very successful paint business, and moves his family up the social ladder of Boston. Lapham, however, is not one of the new types of American businessman, the ruthless plutocrat, rather he is the old-fashioned trustworthy Yankee trader, and the story deals with how he fares in the industrial capitalist environment. It is also a novel of manners, telling the story of the courtship of a daughter, and the difficulties the family deals with in attempting to move from one social class to another.
