From the 1950s through the late 1980s, U.S. Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in North Carolina was the site of one of the worst water contamination crises in American history. Drinking water from the base’s wells was found to be laced with highly toxic chemicals—including trichloroethylene (TCE), perchloroethylene (PCE), benzene, and vinyl chloride—used in industrial cleaning and fuel storage. These carcinogenic substances seeped into the groundwater and were unknowingly consumed by tens of thousands of Marines, their families, and civilian workers. The exposure has been linked to a wide range of severe health problems, such as cancers, birth defects, neurological disorders, and autoimmune diseases.
