Summary
Romans Part 12 – Romans 3:21-31 Verse 21 • “But now” – when was the righteousness of God apart from law manifested? – when the mystery was revealed to Paul – Rom 6:14, 7:6. Paul is the only one to teach we are not under law. • There was a righteousness in law – Phil 3:4-6, Psalm 7:8. • “being witnessed by the law and prophets” – Abraham, David – Gen 15:6, Psalms 32:2 – They witnessed it but didn’t understand how it could be done. The mystery explains how this could be done. Paul’s message is further revelation. It builds upon the rest of scripture. Verse 22-23 • “Which is by faith of Christ”- Gal 2:16, Gal 3:22, Luke 2:49, 22:42. Work of Christ • “unto all” – 2Cor 5:19. “Upon all that believe” – Rom 4:5. • “There is no difference” – Between Jew and Gentile. First time you see Paul say there is no difference between Jew and Gentile. •”All have sinned and come short of the glory of God” Gods glory, his standard, his righteousness is what we measure ourselves to. Verse 24-25 • “Justified freely by his grace” – Job 25:4, Psalm 143:2, Prov 3:34, James 4:6, 1Pet 5:5 – Moreevidence that Paul was given a mystery. God gives grace to all at all times, but on his terms – Exo 33:19, Psalm 84:11, 116:5. “Freely” I believe is the key word here. • “redemption in Christ” – Eph 1:7 – You are redeemed, Christ paid the ransom for all – 1Tim 2:6 I. O.T. saints – Rom 4:25, Heb 9:15. N.T. Israel – 1Peter 1:18-19. • “Christ is a propitiation for all” - Col 1:10, 1John 2:2. • “Through faith in his blood” – 1Cor 2:2, 15:3-4 • “His righteousness for remission of sins past” – It is Christ righteousness and his sacrifice that can provide remission of sins for all who have faith, past, present, and future – Heb 10:26, 2Cor 5:19. Verse 26 • “at this time” – The revealing of the mystery to Paul – 1Cor 2:7-8, • “His righteousness” – This is emphasized in this passage, it is His righteousness whereby we can be justified, not ours. • “Just and the justifier” – The mystery explains how God can be just to justify sinners. Verse 27 • “Where is boasting” – under the law – Duet 6:25, Psalms 18:20-26 vs Phil 3:3-7, Eph 2:8-9 – It is excluded because God is the justifier. • “The law of faith” – Rom 1:17, Gal 3:11. Verse 28-31 • “Therefore we conclude” – Because all are sinners, because the law shows your sins, we are “justified by faith” in Christ blood “apart from the law.” • “There is one God” he is God of all. Both the Jew and Gentile. • “By faith and through faith” – By faith the circumcision did something because faith without works is dead – Heb 11. Through faith, which is not accessed through covenants but the cross – Eph 2:11-13. • “establish the law” – We do not make the law void through faith but establish it. The law is good if used lawfully – 1Tim 1:8-9 – The law always stood upon faith – James 2:14-26 – The works of the law proved their faith. Definition of Salvation terms used in this passage: • Righteousness – The condition acceptable to God. • Justification – A judicial decision or sentence. (Declared righteous) • Propitiation – An expiatory sacrifice. • Redemption – A releasing effected by payment of ransom. • Remission – Passing over, disregarding. • Grace – Undeserved favour, • Faith – Belief with the predominant idea of trust or confidence in God or Christ.
