Romans Part 17

from Grace Truth Bible Fellowship · host Grace Truth Bible Fellowship

Romans Part 17 – Romans 5:6-11 Verse 6 • “For when we were yet without strength” – Meaning we as humanity have not the strength to save ourselves, seems to be speaking of before the cross and not to whether or not one could repent and have faith. Our hope is not in our own strength. • “in due time” – Christ came and Christ died at the right time – Gal 4:4, John 8:20, Mark 14:41 • “Christ died for the ungodly” – The gospel is only for the ungodly. This goes against limited atonement because all are ungodly (Rom 3:23). The sad part is the world has a free gift offered but rejects it. Verse 7-8 • “For scarcely for a righteous man would one die” – This is reality, fact of the matter. • “Peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die” - Perhaps for a good man some might would die for them, maybe. – John 15:13 • “But God commended his love” – Eph 2:4-6 • “while we were yet sinners Christ died for us” – this is how you know God loves you – Gal 2:20, Eph 5:2, Titus 3:3-6 i. Different than John 3:16 – John 3:10-21 – The serpent wasn’t sacrificed – Num 21:4-9, what was known at John 3? – John 2:19-23, Matt 16:21-22, Mark 16:9-15, Luke 24:44. Verse 9 • “much more” – then the benefits in verse 1-5, Paul expanding on the blessings. • “being now justified by his blood” – Rom 5:1 – Contrast – Heb 6:11, 9:28, 10:36. • “we shall be saved from wrath to come” – God will pour out his wrath at the great tribulation – Rev 16:1. But we are delivered from it – 1Thess 1:10 Verse 10 • “while we were enemies” – Opposition, the status of humanity with God before the cross. • “we were reconciled by the death of his Son” – After the cross, no longer enemies but reconciled - 2Cor 5:19, 1Tim 2:5-6 • “we shall be saved by his life” Christ death reconciled is, by much more than that we can be saved though his resurrection, you have to have both the death and resurrection for salvation. Just like Rom 4:25 the emphasis is on Christ death and resurrection. Verse 11 • “And not only so” – There is more • “we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ” – We have Joy because of Christ and what he has done. Knowing your position with God and the spiritual blessing you have should bring Joy. • “by whom” – Christ Jesus. • “We have now received the atonement” – Greek word is ‘katallage’ and is translated reconciliation 2x and reconciling 1x. In the OT 1 Hebrew word translated “Atonement” means to “cover sin and the other Hebrew word that is translated “Atonement” can mean to “reconcile”. In the context of Romans 5:11 it seems that “reconciliation” is the better fit. Spiritual Blessings in Romans 5:1-11 • “peace with God” - vs 1 • “stand in grace” - vs 2 • “hope of glory” – vs 2 • “Love of God shed in our hearts” – vs 5 • “Holy Ghost given unto us” – vs 5 • “saved from wrath” – vs 9 • “received reconciliation” – vs 11 If you have any questions: My email - [email protected]
