Summary
Romans Part 18 – Romans 5:12-21 Verse 12 • “by one man” – Adam • “sin entered…. And death by sin” – By Adam’s one sin, death entered – Gen 2:17, 3:19, 1Cor 25:21. i. A verse against evolution - evolution says that death entered millions of years before man, survival of the fittest. The Bible says that death entered by man. • “death passed upon all men” – Gen 1:28 vs 5:1-3, • “for that all have sinned” – Romans 1-3. Verse 13-14 • “for until the law sin was in the world” – Gen 3:6, 5:8, 29, 39 • “sin is not imputed when there is no law” – Gen 4:8-15 – Rom 2:12 • “death reigned from Adam to Moses” – Death was on the throne – Heb 11:13 • “Even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam’s transgression” – Adam was given a law – Gen 2:16-17. Could anyone after Adam break this law? No – Gen 3:24. • “who is the figure of him to come” – Adam was a type of Christ – 1Cor 15:22 – we know he is a type became the Scripture say he is. Verse 15 • “but not as the offense so also the free gift” – What Adam and Jesus did were similar but there is a difference. • “through the offence of one many be dead” - It was Adam’s sin, not his good works that was imputed to all. • “much more the grace of God and the gift by grace“ – The grace of God and the gift by grace is greater, better, more able to abound to all men then the act of Adam. • “which is by one man, Jesus Christ” – The grace of God and the gift of grace also come by one man, Jesus Christ. • “hatb abounded to many” – God a grace abounds in this dispensation – Eph 1:2 i. “Many” – Acts 1:1, 3:21, 9:32, 10:39, 13:39, 22:10, 24:8, 26:2&3, Rom 9:5. Verse 16-19 • These verse is explain the similarities and the difference. • The similarity is that both happened by “one man” • The difference is that one mans sin brought death upon all, but one mans death brought the gift of eternal life to all. In a sense, Adam let death out, but Christ reigned it back in. – Rev 1:18 • “receive” - Shows you have to have faith, not teaching universalism here. • vs 18 explains the above and also shows that “many” can mean “all” • Vs 19 – all are born in the first “one man” but if they have faith in the “second one man” they can receive eternal life. Verse 20-21 • “The law entered” – With Moses. • “that the offence might abound” – The law shines a light on our sin – Rom 3:19-20, 1Tim 1:8-11 • “but where sin abounded” – because the law was showing it. • “grace did much more abound” – a dispensational change – Gal 3:16-24, Rom 6:14. • “sin hath reigned unto death” – under the law • “grace reign” – in this dispensation through Jesus Christ grace reign and we can have eternal life because of Him and his gift of grace.
