Summary
Romans Part 19 – Romans 6:1-11 Verse 1-11 • “what shall we say then?” – About Rom 5:20-21. • “shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?” – This reasoning is similar to Rom 3:5-8. When you teach the gospel correctly this should be a natural response, but also a response of one who still needs to learn that sin is never okay. • The answer to the above question is “God forbid” – by no means, let it not be. • “how shall we that are dead to sin,” – “we” are those who are saved. Are dead to sin. He says that as a matter of fact. We don’t make ourselves dead to sin daily, the Spirit does it for us once. Col 3:3 • “live any longer therein?” – If something is dead to you it means you have nothing to do with it. • “know ye not?” – Paul questioning their knowledge. Are you ignorant of the following statement? • “so many of us” – Not universalism. So many of us that are saved, that believe the gospel. • “as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death” – Baptized ~immersed for the purpose of identification.~ Meaning, you are immersed and identified with Christ, which means you are immersed and identified with his death. – 1Cor 12:13,27, • “we are buried with him by baptism into death” – In Christ your old man is dead – 2Cor 5:17, Col 3:9 • “like as Christ was raised up from the dead”– Luke 24:1-8 • “we also should walk in newness of life” – In Christ we are made new – 2Cor 5:17, Gal 6:15, Col 3:9-10. Knowing your identification with Christ, His death, and His resurrection is how you walk in newness of life and not under the dominion of sin and the old man. • If you make “baptism” here water baptism then you must adopt the position of water baptismal regeneration. The baptism here is the operation of the Spirit – Col 2:11-12. • There are many baptisms in the Bible – Exo 29:4, Matt 3:11, 1Cor 10:2, 1Cor 12:13. But only one is needed today ( Eph 4:5) and that one is baptism into Christ – Rom 6:3-4. • “for if” – In the Greek when the conjunction “if” is with an indicative, it can be translated “since” and does not carry the if/then uncertainty but rather a certain result. • “planted together” - Conjoined, United. • “in the likeness of his death…. also the likeness of his resurrection“ – You cannot separate Christ death from his resurrection. In Christ your old man is crucified and you posses resurrection – Rom 8:11 • “Knowing this” – We walk according to knowledge, we should know what Paul is about to say. • “the old man is crucified with Him….. that we should not serve sin” – The old man is dead. How can you serve something that is dead? Only if you don’t know it is or reckon it to be – Vs11 – grace does not teach licentiousness but righteousness and holiness because of who you are in Christ. • “he that is dead, is freed from sin” – Freed – dikatoo ~justified~ the one that is dead to sin is Justified. I believe translated “freed” here because of the context. Justified from sin does not merit continuance in sin. Freed gives the idea of not being bound to or servant to. • “now if” - Again here the “if” could be translated since. • “we be dead with him we also believe we shall live with him” – Just like you cannot separate Christ death and resurrection, you cannot separate our resurrection in Christ from our death in Christ – Rom 6:5, 8:11,18 – Christ is seated in heaven and we are seated with him – Eph 1:19-20, 2:6. • “knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more” – We know by faith in the scripture – 1Cor 15:3-4, Rom 8:34, 14:9. • “death bath no more dominion over him” – Just as death does not have dominion over those in Christ - 1Thess 4:13-18 • “he died unto sin once” – We also die unto sin once.
