Romans Part 21 – Romans 7:1-7 Verse 1-3 • “Know ye not brethren” – Don’t be ignorant. • “I speak to them that know the law” – mainly Jews but also maybe some Gentiles – Acts 15:21 – Romans is written to a mixed crowd I believe (1:16) but Paul addresses the Jews a lot – Rom 2:17, 3:1, 4:1, 9:3, 10:1. • “the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth” - Paul is not arguing that the law was in affect at that time, he is going to make an illustration. • “vs 2” – till death do us part – Duet 25:5-10, Ruth 3:12, 4:1,12. Mark 10:11-12. She is freed from her oath if her husband die and can marry whom she will – 1Cor 7:39. • “vs 3” – “husband” = law. “She” = Jewish members of the body of Christ. “Another man” = Christ. Being now married to Christ you have to forget the old husband. “Law” Verse 4 • “dead to the law” – Gentiles were never given the law – Rom 3:1-2, 9:4, Eph 2:12. Today, we are not under the law Gal 3:23-25. • “by the body of Christ” – Rom 6:3-4,6 – You are dead to sin and the law because the law is the strength of sin – Rom 3:20, 1Cor 15:56. • “married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead” – you can’t marry a dead man. The point is not to make us Christ bride but that we are joined to him and should submit to him and not the law – Eph 5:30-32, Phil 2:5-8, Rom 6:12-13. To make more of this illustration and make us the bride of Christ is wrong. Why this is important is because if you make the church the bride of Christ you will make yourself spiritual Israel and put yourself under the law which goes against Pauls point that we are dead to the law – Gal 4:9-11 – Jer 2:2, 3:1,6-8,14,20, 31:32, Isa 54:5-6, Rev 21:9 • “that we should bring fruit into God” – This the function of being one with Christ. This is our spiritual obligation but is different than our spiritual reality of being dead to the law and alive unto Christ. Verse 5-6 • “when we were in the flesh” – Speaking spiritually, now in Christ. • “the motions of sins, which were by the law” – Motion here had to do with “inordinate emotions” or can mean “calamity, affliction, suffering, passion”. These are brought out by the law – Rom 5:20. • “did work in our members” – The law says don’t, you can’t, or do this or that. This goes against our flesh. It has been said that if you want a kid to break a window tell them not to do it. • “to bring forth fruit unto death” – The fruit of the law is sin, the wages of sin is death. • “But now” – Something had changed. • “we are delivered from the law” – Gal 2:19 – We dead to the law through the law because the law is what says we are guilty and need to be put to death. That death happens when you were placed into Christ and his death. Eph 2:15 • “we should serve in newness of spirit, not in oldness of the letter” – 2Cor 5:17, Eph 4:23-24. Verse 7 • “is the law sin?” – If we the strength of sin is the law and we are now to dead to the law. Is the law sinful? • “God forbid” – By no means. • “I had not known sin but by the law, I had not known lust, except the law said, Thou shalt not covet.” – Paul in law school was taught “thou shalt not covet” – Exo 20:17. Why would you covet your neighbors things? Once you’re told not to, you notice why they’re better than what you have? “Or so you think” • Example – you have a field with little growth. You go and till the field and then all sorts of weeds grow up tall. Is the tiller evil? No – The seeds were already there. If you have any questions: My email - [email protected]
