Summary
Romans Part 24 – Romans 8:12-18 Verse 12-14 • “Therefore” – Because we are in the Spirit and the Spirit dwells in us • “ye are debtors not to the flesh” – We don’t owe the flesh anything. Christ is who redeemed us and is who we should give our lives to – 2Cor 5:14-15, 1Cor 6:19-20 • “Vs 13” – Not teaching you can lose salvation – Gal 6:8 vs Rom 6:23, 1Cor 6:8-11, Eph 5:1-19, Col 3:1-17 – Comparing scripture with scripture and reading the context of verse 13 I conclude Paul is not speaking of those in the Spirit in the first part of 13. You can make spiritual application tho. • “as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God” – Key word is led. Leaders really have no control over what their followers do. If you are saved you are led of the Spirit but that doesn’t mean you’re walking after the Spirit 24/7. Led of the Spirit is dispensational, OT Israel was led by the Law – Gal 5:18. We are led of the Spirit by Gods word, not emotions or circumstances. Verse 15-16 • “For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear” – Gal 5:1, 2Tim 1:7. • “but ye have received” – Again showing the Spirit is something you received at Salvation. You don’t have to pray for him to come down or to lead you. These thins happen at salvation. • “the Spirit of adoption” – The Spirit of sonship. Adoption speaks to gaining the rights of a full grown son – Gal 4:5-7 which doesn’t fully happen till the redemption of our bodies – Rom 8:23. • “whereby we cry, Abba, Father.” – A phrase only spoken by Sons – Mark 14:36, Gal 4:6. In all three verses the context surrounds obedience and suffering. Abba is an Aramaic word. • “The spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit” - How? The Bible doesn’t answer fully but it’s safe to assume by the Word of God and what he has said – Eph 6:17. How do we know we are children of God? – The scripture tell us, and we believe it – Rom 8:14, Gal 4:5-7. Any other answer outside of the scriptures is uncertain and baseless and could bring others under the spirit of bondage and fear because we all have different feelings. • Examples: ▪ When the Spirit bears witness, He removes all doubt ▪ When the Spirit bears witness, He removes all temptation ▪ When the Spirit bears witness, He energizes us toward Christian service ▪ When the Spirit bears witness, He creates a spirit of generosity Verse 17-18 • “if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ” – A spiritual reality, you are in Christ and Christ in you and all that belongs to him belongs to you – 1Cor 3:21-23, Eph 2:4-7. • “ if” = Since – Paul is not saying you have to suffer the same way Christ did to qualify for glorification. • “we suffer with him that we may be glorified together” – Suffering can’t be measured or quantified. Each individual is different. Suffering is suffering and when you live for Christ you will experience some type of suffering. Don’t compare one persons suffering with another’s. In Christ you will be glorified – Col 1:27, 3:4 • “For I reckon” – Judge, count up or weigh the reasons, take into account. Logical reasoning. • “the sufferings of this present time” – If we did compare our suffering, Paul would be a good person to compare to since he is writing this – 2Cor 11:23-28. • “are not worth to be compared to the glory that shall be revealed in us” Paul thinks of all his sufferings which he had experienced up to this point (2Cor 11:23-28) and concludes that they aren’t even worthy to be compared to the glory we will have with Christ – Rom 5:2, Eph 1:18, Col 1:27.
