Summary
Romans Part 27 – Romans 9:1–5 Verse 1-3 • “I say the truth in Christ, I lie not” – Gal 1:20, 1Tim 2:7. • “my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Ghost” – Acts 23:1, 24:16. • “Vs 2” – Romans 10:1 – Throughout the book of Acts he goes to Jews first showing his desire to see them saved – Acts 17:1-3, 22:17-22…… 28:28. • “For I could wish that myself were accursed from Christ” Accursed means ~A curse~ and is always in reference to judgment - 1Cor 12:3, 16:22, Gal 1:8-9 – Acts 23:14 – “anathametized” ourselves with an “anathema”. Paul’s wish here is similar to Moses – Exo 32:31-35 • Notice the word “wish” - This gives evidenced to Paul’s Spirit inspired words in Rom 8:35-39. • “for my brethren my kinsman according to the flesh” – Act 21:39, 22:3, Gal 1:14, Phil 3:4-6. • Why is Paul sorrowful for Israel? Because they rejected the gospel of the kingdom, their messiah – Luke 9:2,6, Mark 15:14, Acts 2:22-23. Verse 4-5 • “who are Israelites” Paul is very clear about whom he is referring to – Israel, Jews, his kinsmen in the flesh. • “to whom pertaineth the adoption” - Exo 4:22 – God bore the nation of Israel and made them his son. Members of the the body of Christ are also referred to as sons of God being in Christ the Son of God – Phil 2:15, Eph 1:5, Titus 3:7. • “the glory” – Exo 29:43, Num 14:22, Isa 43:5-7, Isa 46:13, 1Sam 4:21-22 – Col 1: We have a hope of glory that is different than what Israel is given. • “the covenants” – Jer 31:31-33, Heb 8:10, Gen 15:18, Psalm 89:3-4. – Eph 2:12 • “the giving of the law” – Duet 4:13, Psalms 147:19 • “the service of God” - Heb 9:1-6, Exo 19:6, 1Pet 2:9, Isa 2:2-3, Zech 8:20-23, Rev 5:10, 20:6. • “promises” – Gen 12:1-3, 2Chron 21:7, Luke 12:32, – We have the promise of resurrection which was prophesied in the OT and promised to Israel first – Act 13:32-39 • “Whose are the fathers” – Duet 10:15, Act 7:32 – Notice that “Fathers” is plural. Isaac and Jacob are never referred to Gentiles as a father. • “whom as concerning the flesh Christ came,” – Rom 15:8, John 1:11, Matt 1:1. • “who is over all” – Not referring to his earthly reign but his Lordship – Eph 1:20-23 • “God blessed for ever” – Praised – Rom 1:25, Mark 14:61. • “amen” - At the beginning of a discourse ~ surely, truly, of a truth. At the end - so it is, so be it, may it be fulfilled. It was a custom, which passed over from the synagogues to the Christian assemblies, that when he who had read or discoursed, had offered up solemn prayer to God, the others responded Amen, and thus made the substance of what was uttered their own. Why the sudden change in Paul’s writing? • For the last 8 chapters we have been learning how we are saved by grace through faith and our position in Christ apart from the law and circumcision. At the end of chapter 8 we reached the climax of this teaching and it would seem to makes sense to move on to how we should live in light of that as he writes in chapter 12-16. • The natural question then is what has happened to Israel and their promises today? As we have already seen, Israel was given covenants and promises that we Gentiles don’t usurp and Paul says they have future still in Romans 11:25-27 • This is what Paul is explaining in chapters 9-11 that Israel is currently blinded/fallen in this dispensation which is the only way Salvation could righteously be offered to all apart from them – Rom 11:12.
