S1 Ep #21: Osher Günsberg ~ TV host & Mental Health Advocate
03/19/2022
It's our season one finale and what a way to end it. We sat down (in person) at the Coogee Pavilion in Sydney to chat to TV host and radio presenter and journalist, Osher Günsberg. Famous for being the host of the reality TV series The Bachelor Australia, The Bachelorette Australia and also Bachelor in Paradise Australia. He's also an author, cyclist, photographer and has his own podcast(s); DadPod and Better Than Yesterday. But in more recent years, Osher has also become one of the leading advocates for mental health here in Australia. Osher has been very open and public about his own struggles namely with depression, anxiety, social anxiety disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, agoraphobia, psychosis, alcoholism, and suicidal ideation. He's written his own memoirs entitled Back, After the Break, which has been a real hit. It was an honour for us to be able to chat to Osher and also to hear his candid thoughts and to share real conversations with him. His advocacy alone is helping tear down the wall of stigma around mental health and it's so great to have someone of his public stature bringing the topic to everyday conversation. The guy is just such an inspiration. On top of all of the above, he's a family man, eats plant based and has also been on the cover of Men's Health Magazine.A thoroughly enjoyable chat and we just wish we had more time with this absolute hero.Follow him @osher_gunsbergFollow us on @theseladsaremental Hosted on Acast. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly • The Next Reel
08/28/2014
The Next Reel
The last of Leone's 'Man with no name' trilogy is the longest and considered by many to be the best. By the time he made it, he was a much more assured and mature storyteller. And it shows. Join us — Pete Wright and Andy Nelson — as we finish the trilogy with 1966's "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly." We talk about Leone and the style he's been developing over the course of this trilogy, and what he brings to the table this go-around. We chat about both the climactic gun fight as well as the scene immediately after it, and look at what the filmmakers and storytellers were working to convey in these sequences. We discuss Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef and the new-to-Leone's-films Eli Wallach, who brilliantly plays Tuco. And we chat about many on the crew who helped make this film what it is. It's a fantastic film, even if Pete prefers the prior one. Watch the movie then tune in! Hey! You know what would be awesome? If you would drop us a positive rating on iTunes! If you like what we’re doing here on TNR, it really is the best way to make sure that this show appears when others search for it, plus, it’s just a nice thing to do. Thanks!! The Night of the Hunter • The Next Reel
08/01/2013
The Next Reel
Charles Laughton is most known for his larger than life performances in films from the 30s through the 60s, but he did have one chance to direct which came in the form of 1955's The Night of the Hunter, a film he also co-wrote with James Agee based on the novel by Davis Grubb. Unfortunately for him, the film was a huge flop. Luckily for us, this quirky anomaly of a film has not only survived but has thrived — it is now critically praised and generally considered to be a classic film. Join us — Pete Wright and Andy Nelson — as we continue our Couples on the Run series with Laughton's The Night of the Hunter. We talk about our impressions of the film, why it works, and what are some of its potential stumbling blocks in connecting with audiences. We chat about the amazing performances, from Billy Chapin and Sally Jane Bruce playing the two kids on the run to Robert Mitchum, Shelley Winters and Lillian Gish, the three adults heading up the film. We discuss the look of the film and how it contributes to the unique vibe Laughton was going for, whether by using silent film techniques or film noir lighting styles. And we talk about the overall tone of the film — from horror to noir to comedy to fairy tale etc. — and how that helps give the film a unique tone not often seen in films. It truly is a wholly unique and special film, and we have a great time talking about it. Tune in! Learn how to support our show and The Next Reel’s family of film podcasts by becoming a member.
