S12 E3 Stories Matter Growing Leaders with Values with Gayle Turner

The process of growing leaders is one of instilling values. Jack Welch, the former GE CEO, said, “Values are behaviors that can be measured.” Storytelling is THE most effective way of coupling our direction with the desired behavior that we model. There are three components to growing leaders. First, explain your values - the behaviors you measure. Second, live by your stated values. Third, tell stories that exemplify the organization’s heroes. Stories of the people whose behavior is laudable. Warning: Failure to walk the talk has serious consequences. Discern your values? Identify the measurable behaviors by which you evaluate your performance and the performance of others. If you or your organization have already discerned your personal and/or corporate values then review them. Articulate how you measure them and then ask yourself how well you’re living them.  Get clear on your values, your metrics for evaluating compliance, and assess yourself for how well you’re living by them. NOTE: It’s a waste of time to work on stories convincing others to live by your values if you aren’t.  There is a caveat to that last statement. You can say you’re working on this and then enlist your protegees and your colleagues to hold each other accountable as you move forward together. Do this now!   Review the stories you’ve identified to see if any of them reflect one of your values. Then, start the process of telling it outloud to yourself while you work toward articulating the behavior you want.
