This remarkable lesson questions our claim of being saved if we serve God only at our convenience. The apostle James wrote, “Faith by itself if it does not result in works {that is effort, action, or participation in the church}, is dead. But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my works. You believe that God is one. Good for you! Even the demons believe that—and they shudder.” But their fear does not save them. We are deceiving ourselves by claiming we believe in God, for we have faith (yet are devoid of effort).
