It will surprise some people that the Bible was not written for us. For example, the Apostle Paul never anticipated that his letters to Timothy would be included in a book we refer to as scripture. His letters to Timothy were for Timothy. His letters to the Corinthians were written to that assembly—Romans was meant for the saints in Rome— Colossians was directed to the saints at Colossae. The Old Testament was for Israel, not the church.  While we liberally apply the scriptures to our modern Christian lives, using literal interpretations to make hard and fast rules can be a mistake.
