Sermon Sunday, March 8, 2026, by Rev. Joyce Shin

from Swarthmore Presbyterian Church · host Swarthmore Presbyterian Church

Today's sermon, by Rev. Joyce Shin, was offered on the 3rd Sunday of Lent, March 8, 2026. The scripture passages this morning were Isaiah 50:4-9a and John 13:20-32. Due to a glitch in the recording, you will hear a gap shortly after the scripture reading and prayer.  The words that Rev. Shin spoke in this gap were: "He is present when Jesus speaks of his body and blood, when Jesus breaks and shares bread, and when Jesus announces he will be betrayed.  It is an intimate scene, made even more so in the Gospel of John by the fact that Jesus has just washed his disciples’ feet.  Judas, one of the twelve disciples, has been cherished just as the others.  And so, when Jesus says just a few verses earlier in the chapter, 'The one who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me' (13:18b), he is quoting scripture, in which the psalmist says, 'Even my bosom friend in whom I trusted, who ate of my bread, has lifted the heel against me, (Psalm 41:9).  Jesus knows that Judas is about to turn his back on him and walk away."
