Should Catholics Have a Prenup? (The Cale Clarke Show)
from The Best of the Week · host Relevant Radio
Do you think that getting a prenuptial agreement helps or hurts a marriage? Cale Clarke discusses the Church's stance on prenuptial agreements (prenups) in the context of a debate involving several public figures. The debate began with a statement by rapper and mogul Zuby, who advocated for prenups, stating that while he trusts God and would trust his wife, he does not trust the government. Pro-life advocate Lila Rose responded by arguing that if one truly trusts their partner, a prenup is unnecessary, and getting one suggests a lack of trust and commitment. Jeremy Boring of The Daily Wire disagreed, stating that a prenup does not facilitate divorce but rather allows couples to consider its consequences beforehand. He also pointed to the historical use of marriage contracts in Jewish tradition. Cale then explains the Catholic Church's actual position, noting that it does not prohibit prenups outright. The Church's primary concern is with the intent and understanding at the beginning of the marriage, ensuring that couples enter into the union freely, faithfully, and open to children. Cale does admit that if a priest becomes aware of a couple who has gotten a prenup before their wedding day, it could cause him to have some concern. We pray for all couples who are married sacramentally so that they can use their marriage as a sign and witness of Christ's never-ending love to the world. We also pray for all couples who have faced any hurt or brokenness in their marriage.
