The foundation of Bhagwat Dharma has been laid by many saints including Saint Dnyaneshwar through this 'Kirtan bhakti'. The purpose of kirtan is not only devotion to God but also social enlightenment, spiritual upliftment, and showing the right direction to society.Even during the period of foreign invasions, many kirtankars did the work of public awareness and enlightened them with the ideas of patriotism.
