Summary
Luke addresses his gospel (just like the sequel, Acts) to the honourable Theophilus. Just as many others have undertaken to compile an account of the events that have been fulfilled in Jesus, Luke also is inspired to record these things. He has carefully investigated and interviewed eyewitnesses and writes this gospel so that his readers might know with assurance the things that they have been taught! As we begin our study in Luke's gospel, we are not asking you to check your minds at the door. We want to carefully investigate these things! To study them hard! To ask questions and to look at them from different angles. The life, death, and resurrection of Jesus is the evidence for our faith - the faith that has been passed down from the apostles. As we examine the life of Jesus of Nazareth, we grow more assured of this gospel we are being instructed in. We see the Kingdom of God unfold in him. We see the standard we strive and grow towards in him. We see the assurance of God's mercy towards us in him. Let us commit ourselves to the task of studying Luke thoroughly - so that we may know thoroughly and with certainty the hope we have been given.
