Spiritual Success Recipe EP. 178

from Excelling in Christ · host Clarence Fell

I want to explore the recipe for spiritual success.  Now, this won't be an exhaustive list, but I aim to hit some high points that I believe are crucial for our journey.   For example, in this fast-paced world of impatience and novelty, folks are constantly jumping from one thing to another, thinking the grass is greener on the other side of the fence.  Hopping from one church to another, chasing the next big thing, that's not how spiritual growth works.  If it did, we'd be one of the most spiritual countries in the world, and I think you'll agree with me, we're not quite there.   What it takes is persistence, a commitment to delve deep, deep into the Word.  That's where true satisfaction lies.  It's a marathon, a long, crazy marathon if you will.  Revelation 2:10 says, "Be faithful unto death," and Jesus reminds us in Matthew 24:13, "The one who endures to the end will be saved."  So, what we're looking for is a consistent, focused, unwavering commitment to spiritual growth.  We're going to keep pressing into it and then still press more.   In today's discussion, we'll explore the importance of drilling one well and drilling it very, very deep.  I love the analogy: to hit water, you've got to dig a thousand shovelfuls all in the same spot.  Scattering shovels here and there won't get you anywhere.  It's about focus and digging deep right into your own heart.   We'll also talk about the willingness to be unpopular.  Jesus said in John 15:18, "If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you."  If the world's giving you too much agreement, too many pats on the back, maybe we need to pause and ask, "Am I really that different?"  We're called to be transformed by the renewing of our minds, not conformed to this world.   Another key point is personal growth.  As Paul says in 1 Corinthians 9:27, "I discipline my body and keep it under control."  Growth is perpetual; it's an ongoing process.  We'll discuss how we can bring every thought into captivity, striving to think as God would have us think.   We'll touch on totally trusting in God, even when things don't go our way.  Think about Job, can we say, "Though He slay me, yet will I hope in Him"?  It's tough, but total surrender is not an option; it's essential.   Navigating the highs and lows is part of the journey.  We'll look at how Paul and Peter managed their ups and downs, reminding ourselves that we're all still in training.  We make mistakes, but a righteous person falls seven times and rises again.   Lastly, we'll emphasize the need for a trusted inner circle, a few people you can truly open up to about your spirituality.  As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.  Be careful who you let into that circle, but know that we can't walk this path alone.   So, as we embark on this exploration, ask yourself: Which way are you going?  If you're on the right path, stay the course.  If not, maybe it's time to make a change.  Let's press on together, striving for that upward way, gaining new heights day by day.   Let's get started!
