Spotlight - Ruth & Kel O Neill

from The Recovery Cwtch - For parents who have a child with an eating disorder · host Ruth Steggles

Spotlight: Conversations with people who have useful information around eating disorders. Kel is the Services Lead, Educator & Therapist at Kel O'Neill Counselling and Services, offering counselling, training and bespoke services with a special interest in Eating Disorders. The work that she does involves her wearing a few different hats—at various times, Counsellor / Psychotherapist, an Educator, and Researcher. She is deeply passionate about understanding the intricacies of Eating Disorders and sharing that knowledge with others, whether it involves working one-on-one with someone affected by an Eating Disorder, teaching a room full of professionals, or delving into research data. From the comfort of her therapy room, Kel runs a busy private practice, available both in person and online. Her work blends Integrative, Existential and Humanistic approaches to support individuals on their journey to recovery.  Her goal is always to create a safe space for exploration and for healing. Led by the belief that knowledge truly is a superpower, Kel is on a mission to break down barriers to recovery by exploring topics like eating disorder awareness, weight bias, and that delicate dance of risk management and harm in eating disorder care. Beyond the therapy room, her time is dedicated to delivering CPD events, contributing to research, and actively publishing with the Lived Experiences of Eating Disorders Research Collective (LEED) and other collaborators. Her commitment to making a difference extends to three-times award-nominated blog, ‘Mental Health Bites,’ and its related YouTube channel. Speaking of things online, Kel is also the creator of ‘The Eating Disorder Recovery Companion,’ an online subscription service for those facing long waiting lists or struggling to access the care that they need. And let’s not forget her role as a Beat Ambassador— for over 15 years and counting! This has led to her involvement in a wealth of co-production projects and lived experience participation.
