Stronger than ulcerative colitis - A trainer's journey
from Through the Eyes of Adversity - Adam Newton
In this episode on Through the eyes of adversity I talk with Laura Blease, a personal trainer at Ultimate Performance and Laura tells a story about her journey living with the auto immune disease Ulcerative Colitis. We talk through topics including, how and when she got diagnosed, a day in her life, and the mental and emotional impacts of the condition as well as how resistance training helps her manage it. We cover both the physical and mental benefits of training with Ulcerative Colitis. As requested…..I usually train 4 times a week, lower, upper and two total body sessions. I like to train back in particular pull-ups, lat pull downs and rows. My lower compound movements are Romanian deadlifts, barbell hip thrusts and a squat variation. I’m intuitive and adapt my sessions according to how I’m feeling that day for example, take more rest between sets or leave more reps in reserve and not train to failure if fatigue is feeling particularly bad that day. I am introducing a little running into my routine, pacing myself with a 3km. I’m also a lover of pole fitness and will aim to get to the studio once a week if possible. Nutritionally I aim to consume 30-40g of protein 3/4 times daily. As soon as I wake I will drink a pint of water before I touch any caffeine. I have a piece of fruit as snacks between meals and have some form of chocolate each evening as I love it and life has to be balanced!!
