Today's crossword was quite the SCRIM, LIVENED with an ingenious theme involving shared letters  (e.g., 23A, Very short-lived gemstones, EPHEMERALDS = EPHEMERAL + EMERALDS, and 63D, Pounding on a pie topping, HAMMERINGUE = HAMMERING  + MERINGUE).
