I had the utmost pleasure of hosting Maira Ezerins, doctoral candidate and researcher from the University of Arkansas, as she walked us through her most recent study and shared insight on how organizations can better support autistic job applicants - to the betterment of candidates across the neurodivergent and neurotypical spectrum alike! Autism affects 1 in 36 people in the U.S. with approximately one million autistic individuals reaching employable age in the next decade. Estimates suggest that 70-80% of autistic adults are unemployed—far surpassing unemployment rates for other disabilities. A key barrier? The interview process. Autistic applicants are often judged on social skills that may or may not be related to job performance.
