The Chilean Constitutional Convention: A Democratic Watershed?

Two years ago, over 1 million Chileans flooded the streets of Santiago to demand a more inclusive and representative social contract, with chants announcing "Chile Despertó!" (Chile has awakened). As a result of the protests, Chile inaugurated its Constitutional Convention, which to many, is an unprecedented innovative tool that can bring about a democratic watershed in the country. Nevertheless, with the uncertainty of the presidential election, violence against the Mapuche indigenous people, and the persistence of the neoliberalism economic model, it is unclear if the Convention really will alter Chile's flawed democratic reality.
