The Emotional Appeal: Scams that Prey on Compassion

from Cyber Chronicles

This is the story of how I almost fell victim to an emotional appeal scam. It started with a direct message from a distant acquaintance—a friend of a friend who was going through a tough time. They shared a heartbreaking story about a medical emergency that had left them financially ruined. The message was filled with desperation, and they were asking for any financial help I could provide, no matter how small. I felt awful. The story was so compelling, and I couldn’t imagine being in their shoes. But something about the situation didn’t sit right with me.
