The Essence of Worship

from NPPBC's Media Ministry

A message from Deuteronomy 26 and Nehemiah 8, Pastor Tommy Boring explores the true meaning and essence of worship according to the Word of God. Worship is not based on personal preference, emotion, or outward appearance. True worship is centered entirely on Jesus Christ and flows from a heart that remembers where God brought us from and what He has done for us. Pastor Tommy explains that God Himself defines worship. Singing, shouting, lifting hands, and outward actions alone are not worship without the presence and moving of the Holy Ghost. Real worship comes from a humbled heart that recognizes the greatness of God, the mercy of salvation, and the deliverance from the bondage of sin. Drawing from Deuteronomy 26, the message highlights God’s command for Israel to bring the first fruits before Him and remember their past. They were to recall being strangers, afflicted in Egypt, and rescued by the mighty hand of God. In the same way, believers today should never forget the pit God brought them out of, the bondage He broke, and the grace that saved their souls. Pastor Tommy emphasizes that worship is deeply connected to remembrance. Remembering our past without Christ and remembering the moment Jesus rescued us should stir gratitude, humility, and praise. If we ever lose the wonder of being saved from hell, something is wrong spiritually. Christ is worthy of worship simply because of who He is and what He has already done. Using Nehemiah 8 as an example, this sermon also focuses on the importance of reverence for the Word of God. When Ezra opened the book, the people stood in honor, lifted their hands, bowed their heads, and worshipped with humility. The Bible remains central to worship because it reveals Christ, convicts hearts, and brings life to the believer. Pastor Tommy challenges believers to come to the house of God with an “audience of One” mindset. Worship is not about impressing people or depending on feelings. God deserves praise whether circumstances are good or bad. Worshipping in difficult seasons honors God and invites the presence of the Holy Spirit. This message is a call to bow the heart before God, remove distractions that take Christ’s place, and once again make Jesus the center of worship. Everything we have came from Him, everything we need is found in Him, and everything we are belongs to Him. Jesus Christ is the reason we worship.
