Pliny, the governor of the Roman province Bithynia in the early 2nd century, wrote a letter to Emperor Trajan seeking guidance on dealing with Christians in his territory. Pliny referred to them as criminals and described how they met on a fixed day before dawn to sing hymns to Christ and take solemn oaths to avoid wicked deeds. Pliny also highlighted that they celebrated the Eucharist by partaking in ordinary food. Cale explains that the true nature of the Eucharist is a sacramental practice and that even the early Christians believed in the Real Presence. The episode also underscores how these historical accounts align with the beliefs and practices presented in the New Testament, confirming Jesus' existence and countering any denial of his historicity among ancient history scholars.
