Juneteenth. Today is Juneteenth, a very special day for those whose ancestors were enslaved in this country for hundreds of years. Juneteenth is a celebration of June 19, when the last of enslaved people were freed. On this day, General Gordon Granger rode into Galveston, Texas and announced that Civil War is now over and that all enslaved people are now free. The word spread, and the formerly enslaved people were so happy that they immediately started celebrating and celebrated for days. That is how Juneteenth started. FROM TEXAS; Important Orders by General Granger. Surrender of Senator Johnson of Arkansas. A SOATTERING OF REBEL OFFICIALS. IMPORTANT ORDERS BY GEN. GRANGER. THE SLAVES ALL FREE. HEADQUARTERS DISTRICT OF TEXAS, GALVESTON, Texas, June 19, 1865. GENERAL ORDERS, No. 3. -- The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, "all slaves are tree." This involves an absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired labor.
