from City Light Church Sermons · host Corey Deyamport

Sermon Notes: 2/23/25 Pastor: Corey Deyamport Luke 6:37-42 . Check us out at: https://citylightvicksburg.org/ Or check us out here: https://www.facebook.com/citylightvicksburg . The command to "judge not," is a call to remove judgement from our hearts. We break this command when we judge an entire life only by its worst moments. When we don’t put ourselves in their position. When we judge, we do so from a self-righteous position. Considering ourselves above and beyond. The Lord forgives us such a large debt, yet we judge others for the small debts they owe us. When we do not forgive our brother from our heart, we will not be forgiven. We are not qualified to condemn others for their actions. We are not qualified. There is only one qualified! The opposite is also true, the measure by which we forgive, we will be forgiven. The language used in this text, speaks in abundance, but we should not be so quick to only view it that way. This whole text is about forgiveness. We should be lavishly forgiving other their debts. We are not called to be the first to move, but when we do, we should move like Jesus. When we have not allowed Christ to change us from the inside out, to be merciful as our Father is merciful, then any teaching or guiding others will only lead to stumbling. If we refuse to be like Jesus, how can we teach others? We destroy our own purpose when we do so, for we are commanded to spread his message. Through humility and training, we should look more and more like our teacher. We should be growing in showing mercy, forgiveness, and love. Is your life reflecting the one who came to save the world? What makes this challenge so difficult, is the enemy within. The whispers within us will continue to build the longer we are disconnected from our Teacher. Consistency is what brings change, either positive or negative. Jesus invites us to change, by considering ourselves before we consider others. Jesus isn’t subtle - the image here is someone telling you to pull a small speck out of your eye, when they have a log in theirs. The small things we call out in others, will most likely be overshadowed by our own failures. Be warned, however, we should speak to our brothers failing. But we need to go about it in a protocol. Be gentle, seek reconciliation, and to consider our own sin before we go to our brother. When was the last time you prayed, “Lord show me my blind spots.” The real change in our own lives happens when we allow the Lord to show us what we need to change.
