In the fall of 2017, I spent three nights at the Evergreen Motor Lodge outside Pine Bluff, Washington — a faded roadside motel shaped like a horseshoe with a blinking neon vacancy sign. The clerk gave me key 7, the last room at the far end of the north wing. It smelled of bleach and something older — a sweet, dusty undertone like dried flowers or old paper. The first night I barely slept, kept awake by the sound of someone crying in the room next door. But the room was supposed to be empty. The second night, I found a photograph wedged between the headboard and the wall: a woman in a yellow dress, standing in front of the same motel, but the sign behind her read 'No Vacancy' and the parking lot was full of cars from the 1970s. The third night, she knocked on my door.
