The Guestbook at the Driftwood Inn

Out past the town line of Maple Creek, Vermont, the Driftwood Inn sat empty for thirty years before I found the key. It was a Tuesday in late October, two in the afternoon, the light already failing behind the mountains. The front desk still held a register — a leather-bound guestbook with entries dating back to 1987. I opened it expecting names and dates. Instead I found pages filled with the same handwriting, the same looping script, and the same date scrawled over and over, month after month, year after year. Every guest who ever signed was named Katherine. Every one of them checked in on the night of November 23rd. I turned the page and saw my own name, in my own handwriting, dated for next month.
