Armageddon- 2419 A.D. (Version 2) by Philip Francis Nowlan Loyal Books Armageddon—2419 A.D. is the first appearance of the character that would become Buck Rogers. First published in the August 1928 issue of Amazing Stories, followed by a sequel in March 1929. These two novellas would spawn a comic strip that would run for over 40 years, a radio series, a movie serial, and a bevy of imitators. QUAG: Questions About Garfield Shawn Bowers If you've ever read a Garfield comic strip, or thought about Garfield for more than a minute, you probably have a lot of questions. On this short podcast, artist and Garfield expert Shawn Bowers works overtime to tackle some of the toughest QUAGs (Questions About Garfield) in the world: How did Garfield respond to 9/11? Does Garfield pornography exist? Can a phone be powered entirely by Garfield apps? Can Garfield get me high? The answers may surprise you! Flash Gordon The 'X' Zone Broadcast Network Starting April 22, 1935, the strip was adapted into The Amazing Interplanetary Adventures of Flash Gordon, a 26-episode weekly radio serial. The series followed the strip very closely, amounting to a week-by-week adaptation of the Sunday strip for most of its run. Flash Gordon was played by Gale Gordon, later famous for his television roles in Our Miss Brooks, Dennis the Menace, The Lucy Show and Here's Lucy (the latter two with Lucille Ball). The cast also included Maurice Franklin as Dr. Zarkov and Bruno Wick as Ming the Merciless. The radio series broke with the strip continuity in the last two episodes, when Flash, Dale and Zarkov returned to Earth. They make a crash landing in Malaysia, where they meet Jungle Jim, the star of another of Alex Raymond's comic strips. The series ended on October 26, 1935 with Flash and Dale's marriage. The next week, The Adventures of Jungle Jim picked up in that Saturday timeslot. Two days later, on Oct Dick Tracy The 'X' Zone Broadcast Network The show first aired in 1934 for the NBC Radio New England region. Himan Brown, then still at college, arranged the radio rights for the comic strip. On February 4, 1935, it was picked up by CBS Radio, airing in 15 minute episodes four times a week. Returning next season it aired on Mutual Broadcasting System from September 30, 1935 to March 24, 1937. From April 29, 1939, "Dick Tracy" became a half-hour-long prime time radio serial, airing at 5:00 pm.When the USA got involved in the Second World War, the show was temporarily cancelled. ABC Blue Network picked it up again from March 15, 1943 to July 16, 1948 and broadcast it on Saturdays. Around this time it was sponsored by Tootsie Rolls, so the music theme was changed to "Toot, Toot Tootsie". The musical arrangements were composed by Ray Carter. The show was directed by Mitchell Grayson, Charles Powers and Bob White. At Mutual, Bill McClintock did the sound effects. At NBC, Keene Crockett did this job
