The Insulation in the Attic at 42 Hemlock Lane

In the late autumn of 2022, Luna's friend Claire buys a fixer-upper on Hemlock Lane in the small town of Millbrook, Ohio. The house is cheap because of a structural issue in the attic—something about the insulation settling strangely. Claire asks Luna to help her strip the old fiberglass batts one cold November weekend. What they find in the joist bays isn't mold or rot. It's a layer of something that looks like dried skin, pressed into sheets between the rafters. And behind it, a journal from 1974 written by a woman named Beverly, who describes her husband's 'collection.' Claire laughs it off, but that night Luna hears her on the phone, her voice low and tight. The next morning, Claire's car is gone, and the attic door is open.
