The Jukebox: April 1, 2000

from The Jukebox: Radio Archive · host Mike Saffran

“The All-Request Rock ’n’ Roll Jukebox,” hosted by Mike Saffran, on “99 BBF”/WBBF-FM (98.9), Rochester, N.Y. Originally aired 7 p.m.–Midnight April 1, 2000.Special note: My final show after more than five years hosting “The Jukebox”! There’s an old saying in radio: “There’s no such thing as a final show.” The meaning: Once it’s known a DJ is leaving a radio station — whether by choice (e.g. resignation) or not of their own choosing — for a variety of reasons the DJ typically isn’t allowed back on the air for a final, or “farewell,” show. So, I felt fortunate to have a “final show”; although not official until a few days later, I had a strong sense entering the night that it would be my final one (“the writing was on the wall,” so to speak). By late the prior year, I had another full-time job; and, though I still enjoyed hosting the show, a new PD was taking the fun out of it (by then, I was there solely for the love of it); thus, I made the decision to leave.Callers aired and other show highlights:00:34 Pat/Rochester (“Indian Reservation [The Lament Of The Cherokee]”) — including caller’s reference to Democrat and Chronicle article, a couple weeks earlier, about my five-year anniversary hosting “The Jukebox” (“People are still talking about it!”)01:20 “That’s not the one we know and love!” — new City Mattress jingle reference01:52 Wally/Byron (“Wild Thing”)02:19 Mark (with Victoria) (“Hot Rod Lincoln”) — including reference to the host’s MG sportscar03:24 Karen/LeRoy (“Beep Beep”)03:48 Mark (“409”)04:31 “Equal time for MGs!” (playing Booker T. & The M.G.’s – “Green Onions”)04:56 Heather/Webster (“Sugar, Sugar”)05:20 Tom/Canandaigua (“Sweet Pea”)05:54 June/Greece (“Little Deuce Coupe”)06:46 Larry/Avon (“It Ain’t Me Babe”)07:52 First of multiple Daylight Saving Time (“spring forward”) reminders08:12 Karen/LeRoy (“Fun, Fun, Fun”)09:19 Chris (of the band Ruby Shooz)/Driving to Oswego (“Rockin’ Robin”)10:58 EJ/Pittsford (“You Really Got Me”)11:35 Reference to newspaper headline: “Police Talk Woman Off Ford Street Bridge”12:20 Kevin (with Karen and others)/LeRoy (“A Hundred Pounds Of Clay”)13:07 Mark (“Maybelline”)14:28 “A very important announcement about ‘The Jukebox’ and your host … this is no April Fool’s Day joke!”15:38 June (“Dead Man’s Curve”) — including host’s reference to Jaguar, MG ‘family connection’ under British Leyland17:28 Lee (“Surfin’ Bird”)17:58 Reference to recent Penny Saver ad: “Free: Horse Manure (You Pick Up)!”18:20 Heather/Webster (“Magic Carpet Ride”)18:50 Reference to “Turn!
