The motel was a low cinderblock building with a flickering vacancy sign and a manager who never showed his face after dark. On the second night, I found a hunting knife taped under the loose floorboard beside the bed, its blade etched with a name I did not recognize. What I learned about the room's previous occupant — a man named Hollis who had checked in six weeks earlier and never checked out — turned a routine tracking trip into something I still cannot shake.
