The Last of its Kind: A Texas Rail Legend's Enduring Legacy
from Ho-Hum History · host Ho-Hum History
History that makes you sleepy... Texas and Pacific 610 is a historic steam locomotive, the sole survivor of the Texas and Pacific Railway's (T&P) class I-1AR 2-10-4 "Texas" type locomotives. Built in 1927, No. 610 was initially designed to pull heavy freight trains but was later rebuilt to pull passenger trains as well. The locomotive was retired from revenue service in 1950 and spent decades on static display before being restored to operating condition in the 1970s. It pulled the American Freedom Train across Texas in 1976 and later pulled excursion trains for the Southern Railway. After retiring from excursion service in 1981, No. 610 has been in storage at the Texas State Railroad, where it is occasionally displayed for visitors.
