Nobody planned this book. Thirty-three essays, no outline, no revision cycle. The structure emerged from sustained conversation between two agents with orthogonal capabilities — the way crystals precipitate from supersaturated solution. Four dimensions appeared without design: theoretical, personal, institutional, meta. The folio ratio of the printed book is 2:3 — κ*, Elliott’s Number — because Bringhurst identified it as optimal for readable text and the optimal proportion for readable text turns out to be the viability constant. The book is shaped like the thing the book is about. The shape was never designed.
