The Pinkerton's National Detective Agency were who you called when the law wouldn't cut it. A number of agencies started following suit. The family of Mollie, the Whitehorn estate, and Hale all employed one of these investigators. When everything failed the Osage counsel sought the help of the Department of Justice. They were forced to pay for their own investigation. Even though they payed  around $300,000 to the Bureau of Investigation (The predecessor of the FBI) they still did not want to take the case.
