The Phillies: Front Office, Development, Pitching, & Batting (PST Show #322)
from The Philadelphia Sports Table | Philly Sports News & Views · host The Philadelphia Sports Table
We can't say it any other way. The Phillies just aren't very good this year. In fact, most times they just plain stink. Earlier this season, they lead the NL East, and now the hope is that they'll simply win a game as their standing falls in the division and possible wild card race. To talk about this disappointing and frustrating Phillies season with us this week, John Stolnis from TheGoodPhight.com and the Hittin' Season podcast jumped onboard for a great interview. But first, we discussed Ben Simmons' max contract extension that'll keep him in a Sixers uniform over the next five-years. (3:25)We then dove into some Flyers talk. Specifically, the re-signing of Nicholas Aube-Kubel to a one-year deal, and Paul Holmgren's retirement as president of the organization and transition to a senior advisor role. (8:05)After that, we discussed how the Eagles have been effectively using analytics and how they have an edge because of it. (15:20)This week on the Highbrow Segment, we discussed Odubel Herrera's domestic violence case, why the Phillies didn't and possibly couldn't outright cut him from the team. Is this a bad look for the Phillies or are they caught between a rock and a hard place with Major League Baseball's collective bargaining agreement? (22:25)Then on the Lowbrow Segment, we're bringing back "Cohost Questions" where the guys randomly ask questions about each other on the fly. (31:20)The guys then go back into the PST archive and respond to their 2019 Phillies season prediction wins from back on Show No. 306 where expectations were high to say the least. (approx. 42:00)What we're throwing down on the Table this week is an in-depth discussion with John Stolnis from The Good Phight and Hittin' Season podcast about this Philadelphia Phillies team, and the wretched disappointment fans are feeling at this point after thinking 2019 would be a promising season. Should the Phillies analytics department, pitching coach Chris Young, and even president, Andy MacPhail, bear the brunt of criticism for how this season has developed? Should there be sweeping changes in the future as to how the Phillies develop their prospects in the minor league system? We also discussed the possible expediting of development for some younger prospects within the farm system as well. All of this and much more this week on the Table! (approx. 47:55)
