from Reformed Thinking · host Edison Wu
Deep Dive into The Pilgrim's Progress by John Bunyan - The Slough of DespondChristian begins his journey carrying a heavy burden on his back, seeking to be rid of it and escape the wrath to come. Initially, he is joined by his neighbor, Pliable, whom he convinces by describing the glorious destination and the promise of everlasting life.Their journey soon leads them to the Slough of Despond, a miry bog that symbolizes the fears, doubts, and despair arising from conviction for sin. Both Christian and Pliable fall in, becoming covered in dirt. Pliable, offended by this immediate difficulty, quickly gives up and struggles out on the side closest to his home, returning there and abandoning Christian.Christian, weighed down by his burden, begins to sink but struggles towards the other side. A man named Help arrives and pulls Christian out of the Slough, explaining that it represents the internal struggles of an awakened sinner.Continuing alone, Christian meets Mr. Worldly-wiseman, who advises him to abandon the difficult path shown by Evangelist. Mr. Worldly-wiseman suggests a seemingly easier way to get rid of his burden: going to the village of Morality to seek help from Mr. Legality or his son Civility. This advice appeals to Christian as a less dangerous alternative. However, when Christian turns towards Morality and approaches the hill near Mr. Legality's house, he is met with another obstacle. The hill appears dangerously high and overhanging, and flashes of fire come from it, making Christian terrified. His burden also seems heavier. Overcome with fear, Christian stops and begins to regret following Mr. Worldly-wiseman's counsel.Reformed Theologian GPT: https://chat.openai.com/g/g-XXwzX1gnv-reformed-theologianPatreon: patreon.com/edi_reformed
