The Red and Blue Soccer Chat – 10/5/22

from The Red and Blue Soccer Chat

Greetings, footy fans! We are in full swing in the EPL and European cup competitions, and we have less than 50 days to go until the World Cup in Qatar. How are we faring in all 3? A new manager has not yet had the impact that the new Chelsea owner would have been hoping for, but that just means Chelsea has looked lackluster while still getting results. Conor Gallagher came off the bench to play spoiler against Crystal Palace, but the lack of thrust and continued defensive wobbling required his intervention at the weekend (with a cheeky dribble and pass from a certain American). They will probably need a better performance today when AC Milan rocks up to Stamford Bridge on the back of their own late win on Saturday. After a nearly month-long layoff from the domestic competition for United, the realization of the gulf between them and their local rivals was on full display on Sunday. When City are in that kind of form there are few teams who can cope with them, but that doesn’t excuse the mentality and lack of confidence from several players. How they react in their upcoming fixtures will determine if this was just a minor setback on a long road back to the top or a continuation of the ongoing troubles that have plagued managers for nearly a decade. A Thursday trip to Cyprus to face Nicosia, currently bottom of the group, may just be the tonic they need before a potentially tricky test against an Everton side slowly finding their form. The USMNT did not leave fans feeling excited for the upcoming World Cup. 1 loss, 1 draw, and 2 truly uninspiring performances have Yank supporters feeling anxious and wondering if GGG can navigate a group they should advance from. Poor tactics coupled with poor selections and even poorer efforts from certain individuals will need to be righted to overcome the equally struggling Wales and slightly less so England (still pre-tournament favorites for many). A repeat of 1998, Iran included, is a definite thought in the back of everyone’s minds. We’ll be double-checking our sound levels while bringing you all of the above, as well as some Hey Aaron!
