The Red and Blue Soccer Chat – 2/8/23

Happy Wednesday, Red and Blue soccer fans! We’re sorry we’ve kept you waiting. But it did allow for us to see the results of the transfer window and the outlook our teams have for their futures. The big story is the big spending of Chelsea. They brought in 8 players at a staggering cost of over $300M. Unfortunately, thus far the impact has been minimal. They obviously need time to get adjusted, but Mykhailo Mudryk was hooked after 45 minutes on his debut. Enzo Fernandez fared much better and looks to be a positive signing for the D-mid role. Madueke and Badiashile also got some game time. But the results and performances have largely been the same, with 2 more draws since bringing in new blood. Will Graham Potter be given time to turn them into a cohesive unit? We’ve already seen one manager get the axe after the transfer window closed. Manchester United, on the other hand, did little business in the window, and was shrewd with what they did do. Marcel Sabitzer was brought in on deadline day as cover for the recently injured Eriksen and was thrown into things immediately as a sub to help ensure Palace didn’t complete their late comeback. They did lose a hard-fought and exciting match with Arsenal, but that has been the only blip. United is fighting on 4 fronts, with a Carabao Cup Final highlighting a congested fixture list in February. The next six weeks will be very impactful in determining whether they have the depth and mental fortitude to bring glory back to Old Trafford. The USMNT had 2 largely unforgettable friendlies as well. We did get to see some debuts for several players, but it will be the slightly more competitive fixtures in March that could be troubling. Will the USMNT have a coach by then? And who will that new manager choose to build around? Gio Reyna is certainly making his case, though typically as an impact substitute for his club.
