Chelsea’s overall form has continued on much the same trajectory. They have a lone win in May – a 3-1 victory over fellow strugglers Bournemouth – but it continues to be their off-field problems overshadowing any attempts at improvement on the pitch. Mauricio Pochettino’s seemingly imminent announcement should settle some nerves, but his task ahead is obvious and monumental. Traveling to Manchester to face a United side desperate to clinch Champions League football is probably not what they were hoping for. Will interim boss Lampard put out the kids to see who really wants to stay, or stick with the veterans? With another game in just a few days against a most-likely satisfied and already celebrating Newcastle, today may be cause for pragmatism. Either way, they are firmly in the middle of the pack. Manchester United has a straight-forward mandate: gain at least 1 point from their 2 remaining games and secure a Top 4 finish and CL football next season. Their recent performances can best be described as workmanlike. Since their loss to Sevilla, they’ve had 2 draws and a succession of mainly 1-0 wins. They’ve looked very good at times, but they’ve also looked leggy and required DDG to save their skin on more than one occasion. Erik 10 Hag seems to recognize what’s going on, but he simply does not have the squad depth to truly fix it at the moment. He will be hoping that there’s just enough left in their legs and minds to rise to the occasion and professionally see off Chelsea before their final-day matchup with Fulham.
