Published 3 works a. To the Christian Nobility of the German Nation (teaching doctrine of Priesthood of all believers), b. On the Babylonian Captivity of the Church (against the Roman Catholic doctrines of the seven sacraments) c. On the Freedom of a Christian Person (justification only through sola fide and sola gratia) d. Dramatic increase of book production 4. 1521 Summoned before Diet of Worms to recant a. Declared a heretic and excommunicated, but protected by Frederick the Wise at Wartburg Castle 5. 1522 Translated New Testament into German a. Unified German language (which then had a variety of dialects) b. Used Erasmus’ Greek text 6. 1525 married a former nun – many priests followed suit 7. 1530 Augsburg Confession, outlining Lutheran theology and practice B) Significance: 1. Theological system a. Larger and Smaller Catechism 2. Table talks at home for Bible study and theological discussions 3.
