The Lord’s table is not always used well; it has often been abused from within. In Paul’s letter to the Corinthians, we find two cautionary tales around abusing the table. One is members within the church engaging during the week in the idolatry and then coming to the Lord’s table as if the two could coexist. Paul rebukes strongly. Those who participate in pagan feasts (which often involved prostitution) are defiling themselves as they participate with demons! And much like the problem Paul addressed in chapter 6, they are in turn defiling the body and table of Christ as they enter into participation there. The second abuse is factions and divisions in the church that lead to one getting drunk while another goes hungry. “If that’s the case, this is not the Lord’s Supper you are observing,” Paul says.In what ways are we in danger of misapplying the table? In what ways are we prone to these two abuses or others like them?

Sir Gawain and the Green Knight Unknown Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is a late 14th-century Middle English alliterative romance outlining an adventure of Sir Gawain, a knight of King Arthur's Round Table. In the tale, Sir Gawain accepts a challenge from a mysterious warrior who is completely green, from his clothes and hair to his beard and skin. The "Green Knight" offers to allow anyone to strike him with his axe if the challenger will take a return blow in a year and a day. Gawain accepts, and beheads him in one blow, only to have the Green Knight stand up, pick up his head, and remind Gawain to meet him at the appointed time. The story of Gawain's struggle to meet the appointment and his adventures along the way demonstrate the spirit of chivalry and loyalty. (Wikipedia) This 20th Century rendering is by WA Neilson. Therefore, this one book tells all of the great epic and romances of the Middle Ages in accessible language for the general public.
